Abstract

BACKGROUND: Subjective sleep complaints have been reported in up to 80% of patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) that cause disruption of sleep pattern and decrease life quality of them. Results of various studies in this regard have shown inconsistency on the relationship between disruption of sleep pattern and variables such as age and gender. The aim of this study was to investigate Prevalence of sleep disorder and its relation with demographic factors (age and gender) in renal patients on maintenance hemodialysis.
METHODS: In this analytical-descriptive study, 148 patients at dialysis center of Emam Reza hospital affiliated to Kermanshah University of Medical science were investigated. The samples were selected by using the method of convenient sampling and the instrument of data gathering was questionnaire. Then, the data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics and chi-square analysis.
RESULTS: 65/5% of the samples were married and 40/5% were illiterate. The analysis of questionnaire revealed that total Prevalence of sleep disorder in hemodialysis patients was (75%) and Significant predictor for sleep disorder in this study was age(>60 years)(p=0.04).
However, there was not such a relationship between sleep disorder and patients’ gender (p=0.42)
CONCLUSIONS: Sleep disorder is common in dialysis patients and it is related to age (>60 years). Therefore, good care of dialysis patients regarding early diagnosis and effective treatment of sleep disorder seems to be logical.
